My skis need maintenance, how do I wax and sharpen my skis?
Maintenance
It is almost time! Your skiing vacation is getting closer and you can almost hit the slopes. How nice is it if your skis are completely ready? In this blog we explain how to maintain your skis so that you can enjoy the slopes.
Waxing and sharpening
Waxing and sharpening your skis will make them ready for your skiing adventures. What do you need for this?
- Ski clamps
- Semi Edger (edge sharpener)
- A clean cloth
- Iron for applying the wax
- Wax
- Wax scraper
- Steel or bronze brush
- Horsehair brush
- Nylon brush
We will guide you step by step through the process for sharpening and waxing your skis.
Step 1: Grinding
Attach the ski clamps to the table and place your ski in them at an angle. The side of the ski is now facing upwards. This is because we are going to be sharpening the ski. You place the edge sharpener on the front of the ski and pull the edge sharpener all the way back along the side. You need to do this on both sides of the ski.
Step 2: Cleaning
Clean your ski with a clean cloth and remove any iron particles. Next, place your ski in the ski clamp with the base facing up.
Step 3: Brushing
After cleaning, we recommend that you use a brush to go over it a little more thoroughly. Use the steel or bronze brush for this step . Start at the tip and slowly work your way up to the tail in short movements. This way you brush the surface so the wax stays on for a long time.
Step 4: Waxing
Choose the wax you want to apply. Don't know which wax to choose? Check the blog about different wax types. Check the wax instructions to see to how many degrees you should set the iron. Your iron should not start to smoke! Hold the block of wax against your iron and make a line on your ski. Do this again from the tip to the tail. Then spread the wax evenly over the ski with the iron.
After you’ve finished, begin to draw lanes slowly over the entire ski. Start again at the tip and go slowly to the tail. Now you have to let the wax dry. This takes at least 1 hour to 1.5 hours. If the wax still feels soft then you should wait and let it dry further.
Step 5: Scraping off the wax
When the wax is completely dry you can scrape it off with the wax scraper. Remember to work from the tip to the tail.
Step 6: Brushing
After scraping the wax off, there is still some wax on the surface. By using a brush you can also remove the remaining wax particles. Use the horsehair brush for this. To finish the layer you can polish it with the nylon brush.
Your ski is now completely ready for your ski vacation. We hope that by following these steps you have easily waxed and sharpened your skis. Do you want more tips regarding the types of wax and brushes you can use? Check out the blogs below.
