What is the difference between different helmet types?

A helmet is a real must when going down the slopes as it ensures that our heads are well protected when we fall! This is especially important when the slopes are slippery.

To ensure that the risk of getting hurt is minimized, it is very important to find the perfect ski helmet. Typically, it is differentiated between three helmet types that are suitable for different skiing conditions. To help you find the perfect one, we will give you a quick overview.

In-mold ski helmet

An in-mold ski helmet is the lightest helmet variant and is way more comfortable than the other helmets. The in-mold (hard outer layer) is fused to a foam layer (often EPS lining). Here, it is important to keep in mind that the helmet is very light and therefore not as robust against damages. The in-mold ski helmet is suitable for on-piste skiing.

Hardshell ski helmet

The first one is the hardshell ski helmet. Here, the outer shell is attached separately from the foam layer (as opposed to the in-mould helmet). The hardshell ski helmet is mainly suitable for people who go off-piste or like to freestyle as it protects your head from branches and other sharp objects.

Hybrid ski helmet

The hybrid ski helmet is a combination of hardshell and in-mold helmet. When there is a high risk of penetration, it is recommended to use a hardshell helmet and in situations wherecomfort is most important, wearing an in-mold helmet is the better alternative.
A hybrid skihelmet combines both advantages and is lighter than a hardshell ski helmet and protects better than an in-mold ski helmet.
The hybrid ski helmet is the best choice for all-round skiers.

Also important to consider:

Every ski helmet is of course different and has different functions. To ensure that you buy the most appropriate helmet we have some tips:

  • Check the brand out and inform yourself about the helmet shape and in what sizes the helmets are available. This way you avoid buying a helmet that is too big or too small.
  • Many helmets have a rotation system at the back which allows you to tighten or loosen the helmet. This allows you to adjust the helmet a bit more to the size of your head.
  • Don't forget your ski goggles! There is a ski helmet with a visor but there are also separate goggles that you can attach to your helmet.

We hope that with this information you can buy the right helmet for your skiing vacation. Safety is important!
